I just completed the book "The Game Maker's Apprentice: Game Development for Beginners" by Jacob Habgood and Mark Overmars. I was able to pick up a rather inexpensive copy of the book at amazon.com that included the CD. You should be able to get the kindle version (or pdf version from Apress) and download the game assets from the Apress website.
Each chapter of the book either covers a new aspect of Game Maker or addresses game design issues.
